Kansas City, MO 9/1/2013
Street Kids/Wildman/Kote It traveled to Kansas City for the ASA National Championship over Labor Day weekend, and because it was Class C, they left behind some key players. They picked up Mahlon Hershberger from Synergy and went to bat Friday night against The Box, winning 15-5.
SKS came back Saturday and beat MacAlwines 15-13 and then beat an all-star team from Hawaii - Shut D - 24-10. SKS was 3-0 and set to play Syndicate, a USSSA team from the area. The pitcher from Syndicate pressed the pitch limits and held SKS at bay, beating Street Kids 8-5. This game was tied heading into the bottom of the sixth, but Syndicate homered three times and SKS just could not manage a comeback.
SKS came back on Sunday morning and beat So Cal/Special Forces 12-1 to reach the Final Four of the tournament. They now were scheduled to play a team that was comprised of Army servicemen from all over the world. This team had players who had to tryout for this team and were from USA, Germany and Korea - among other countries. Army led this game most of the way, including leading by as much as six runs, but SKS battled back scoring six runs - highlighted by a huge, exciting three run home run by Tim Austin - to tie the game at 10 heading into the top of the seventh. But Army's shortstop came through with a huge home run in the top of the seventh to take a 15-10 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, SKS managed only one run and fell to Army, 15-11, ending their tournament run.
SKS (4-2) finished fourth out of 41 teams and their only two losses were to the two finalists, including the eventual national champions, Syndicate. Jeremy Hochstetler led SKS going 15-for-21 but the real standouts today was on defense, as the SKS team played nearly flawless. Scott Martin and Fred Schmucker made unbelievable jaw dropping, full speed over-the-wall catches in the oufield and Nick Bishop also played an amazing second base.
SKS will return to action later this month and conclude the post season run with the GSL World Series in October.
