Indianapolis, IN 4/5/2014
Street Kids Softball went 5-1 on their way to winning their USSSA debut in Indianapolis at the McCracken. They beat Boom twice in the finals, including battling back from an early 17-3 deficit to win the "if" game.
"This team showed tremendous heart today," said veteran pitcher Lanny Fisher after the game. "JR (Shapiro) and Terry (Patesel) did a great job managing this team today, pushing all the right buttons. We have some great depth on this squad and I am excited for this season."
It was indeed a team effort today as the Kids started off 2-0, defeating Rockstar and Summit City, but lost to Boom in the winners bracket finals 18-11. They went to the losers bracket and defeated Rockstar once again, 29-14 to reach the finals.
In the first game of the finals, SKS beat Boom 25-18 to force the "if" game. In that game, Boom came out red hot, putting up 17 runs in the first inning. But SKS battled back and had a huge seventh inning, and eventually held off Boom to win, 31-25, winning their first tournament of the 2014 season.
Nick Bishop had a monster day, batting .864 with 16 RBI's, second on the team behind Jamie Simpsons' 22 runbs knocked in. He ended the tourney with 11 straight hits. Bishop was also stellar on the mound in back up action to Fisher. Joining Bishop on the All-Tourney team was Bobby Edelberg (who as almost as great as Bishop at the plate), Simpson (who led the team in home runs and RBI's), Joe Horvath, Ronnie Simmons and Kevin Lewandowski.
Dating back to the beginnning of the 2011 season, SKS has won 33 of the 63 tournaments they have entered. Including todays tourney, they have reached the finals a remarkable 48 times during that same span.
